The City of San Antonio's watershed protection and preservation program, which was initiated in 2000, will continue through 2020. In addition to the $90 million set aside for watershed protection and preservation of sensitive land over the aquifer's recharge and contributing zones through purchase of conservation easements and fee simple acquisitions, $10 million will also be used to create new protection zones within urban areas of Bexar County with the intention of safeguarding the city's drinking water. By working with scientists, conservationists, landowners, and concerned citizens, the City of San Antonio looks forward to building on the success of the past aquifer protection initiatives.
The City's contracted land trusts work with the landowners and manage much of the due diligence leading up to the closing of conservation easement. The land trusts execute an option agreement with the landowner and, just before closing on the conservation easement, the option agreement is assigned to the City.
