The Past: HARC’s History
HARC owes its origins to the vision and initiative of Houston oilman, real estate developer and philanthropist George P. Mitchell, b. 1919 – d. 2013. HARC was established in 1982 as a not-for-profit university consortium that could act as a technology incubator to bridge basic research and market applications.
In 2001, HARC re-aligned its mission to concentrate the research focus on sustainable development. This resulted in significant organizational restructuring, recruitment of new leadership, implementation of integrated administrative processes, and an organization-wide collaborative approach.
Today, HARC engages in projects that help people thrive and nature flourish. Our expertise is focused on the science and engineering needed to understand and address issues related to air quality, clean energy, and water quality and supply.
The Present: HARC as a Research Hub
HARC is a research hub that provides independent air, energy, and water analysis to people seeking scientific answers. We are focused on building a sustainable future. HARC’s research activities support the implementation of policies and technologies that promote sustainability based on scientific principles. This type of science-based, non-partisan research is absolutely critical to create sustainable solutions.
HARC has built an efficient organizational and management structure that makes it a hub of collaboration; not only among HARC staff, but with a multitude of other organizations. HARC has proven itself to be a capable manager of multi-million dollar projects that are multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary.
HARC works with local, state and federal agency partners to achieve public policy objectives.
HARC works with other not-for-profit and private sector organizations to jointly accomplish beneficial results.
HARC has created a collaborative work culture and stable work environment of smart, principled, and agile people who are excited about what they do and look forward to what they will accomplish in the future.
