James L. Heilman Updated:08/2020

James Heilman is the PI for FLUXNET sites in a grassland and a forest on the Edwards Plateau in central Texas, part of a global network of eddy flux tower installations for monitoring carbon, water, and energy exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere.  I currently teach one undergraduate course (SCSC 309 – Water in Soil and Plants), and team-teach a second undergraduate course (SCSC 307 – Crop Biology and Physiology).

Water Resources Program Areas:     

  • Agricultural and Landscape Irrigation
  • Crop and Landscape Water Use  

Expertise:     

  • Impacts of tillage, fertilization, and other cultural practices on water use and water quality;
  • Use of furrow diking and water harvesting to capture rainfall for crop water use;
  • Management effects on nitrogen mineralization, nitrogen availability to crops, and downward movement of nitrate in soils.
