Just the beginning:  Outdoor Learning Center and master gardener greenhouse at the Arboretum on Water Street in Jasper.

Jasper County, Butterfly Capital of Texas — Butterfly Festival is the first Saturday in October, during the monarch butterfly migration through East Texas. It is held at the Outdoor Learning Center at 225 Water Street, at the same time as the Chamber of Commerce’s Fall Fest on the courthouse square. Enjoy a full day of arts & crafts, music, food, and free kids activities. The master gardener plant sale and the Butterfly Fest silent auction are all helping to improve the greenhouse and Arboretum.

Jasper County’s Texas A&M AgriLife Extension services offers a variety of educational outreach services including programs such as Master Gardener,  Master Naturalist and Master Wellness; 4-H and youth education; diabetes, health and nutrition education; and Ag and natural resources programs.

Jasper Master Gardeners manage the Jasper County  Farmers Market  Saturday mornings during the growing season, May – July and September – November, 8 to 11 a.m. near the intersection of Hwy 190 and 96 in Jasper. The Longleaf Ridge chapter of Texas Master Naturalists will start another set of classes February – August, 2014.

Jasper County is located in East Texas and the county seat, Jasper, is 115 miles northeast of Houston and 23 miles west of the Sabine River and Louisiana. It lies half way between Beaumont and Lufkin. Jasper is surrounded by numerous rivers, national and state forests for fishing, hunting, camping and boating, and three major lakes, Lake Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend and Steinhagen, also known as Dam B.

The 4-H program in Jasper County offers a variety of activities for youth who are in the third grade through 19 years of age. The Jasper County Junior Livestock Show and Sale is  in March. Click on the 4-H tab for newsletters and links to state 4-H websites.

Jasper County ranks as one of the biggest producers of forestry-related products in all of Texas based on gross receipts from timber production. The County is fairly diversified agriculturally with  producers in beef cattle, hay production, row crops, nurseries and hunting leases. It is our goal to provide quality research-based information, educational programs and technical assistance to the people of Jasper County.
