Texas Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office Updated:04/2022

In February 2010, after an absence of twelve years, Region 2 (Southwest Region) reestablished the Texas Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (TXFWCO) in San Marcos, Texas. The TXFWCO is collocated with the San Marcos Aquatic Resources Center (SMARC) in central Texas. The mission of the TXFWCO is to work with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish and other aquatic organisms and their habitats in Texas.

The primary responsibilities for the TXFWCO includes:

  • Recovery of listed and candidate species
  • Restoration of inter-jurisdictional fisheries and aquatic systems
  • Management of inter-jurisdictional fisheries
  • Fulfilling mitigation activities
  • Restoring depleted aquatic populations
  • Providing fish and wildlife management assistance to tribes and on Fish and Wildlife Service Lands
  • Aquatic invasive species (AIS) planning and prevention activities.

The TXFWCO is responsible for the implementation of the National Fish Passage Program (NFPP), the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP), which in Texas includes the Southeast Aquatic Research Partnership (SARP), the Desert Fish Habitat Partnership (DFHP), the Reservoir Fish Habitat Partnership (RFHP), and the Aquatic Invasive Species Program (AIS). The TXFWCO also partners with other federal, state and private entities to prevent and control aquatic invasive species in the State of Texas.
