The Lesser Prairie Chicken Initiative Updated:03/2022

Mission
To conserve and increase lesser prairie-chicken populations by promoting the health of grazing lands and supporting the long-term sustainability of agricultural operations in the lesser prairie-chicken’s range.

The Lesser Prairie-Chicken Initiative, led by the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, is a partnership-based, science-driven effort that uses voluntary incentives to conserve America’s western rangelands, wildlife, and rural way of life. The Natural Resources Conservation Service launched the Lesser Prairie-Chicken Initiative (LPCI) to help ranchers and farmers voluntarily enhance lesser prairie-chicken habitat while improving the long-term sustainability of their agricultural operations.

With 95% of lesser prairie-chicken habitat located on private lands, empowering landowners to improve rangelands is essential to conserving and expanding lesser prairie-chicken populations. LPCI’s conservation approach recognizes and builds upon the shared goals of LPCI partners and private landowners—win-win conservation at its best.

To further expand its impact, in 2021, the NRCS released its Framework for Conservation Action in the Great Plains Grassland Biome, providing an overarching vision and approach for conserving Great Plains Grasslands to benefit wildlife and producers, including LPCs and other grassland-dependent wildlife.

Today, LPCI’s work is more important than ever. Through proactive, community-based, collaborative conservation, we aim to fulfill a vision of a southern prairie landscape in which both lesser prairie-chickens and agricultural producers thrive.

LPCI is part of Working Lands For Wildlife, which is led by USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
